Logical Fallacy Activity

Due date

Purpose

This activity will help you recognize, describe, and discuss logical fallacies.

Task

Step 1: Click here to review a list of logical fallacies.

Step 2: Click here to access the short clip from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with John Stewart. Watch the video at least twice. Upon the second viewing, note as many logical fallacies as you can.

Step 3: Write a brief reflection (100-250 words) noting the logical fallacies you identified and discussing why these are problematic. You might also connect this to the power of rhetoric and how logical fallacies and erroneous stereotypes about groups of people—especially when verbalized or written by people in positions of power—can have real and dangerous consequences.

Step 4: Discuss your reflections with a peer or small group and/or your class.
